Migraines and Natural cures and Natural Remedies

A throbbing headache, usually occurring on only one side of the head. It is marked by severe pain, sensitivity to light, and other disturbances during the first phase. Attacks may last for hours or days. The disorder occurs more often in women than in men. The chances that a patient will have migraines may be inherited. The exact cause for the disorder is not known. The head pain is related to widening of blood vessels, which may be the result of chemical changes that cause spasms of the vessels.

Allergic reactions, excess carbohydrates, iodine-rich foods, alcohol, bright lights, or loud noises can begin attacks. Migraines may begin with sensations called auras. These may be seeing disturbances, such as flashing lights or wavy lines, or a strange taste or odor. Other disturbances are tingling, dizziness, ringing in the ears, or a feeling that part of the body is distorted in size or shape. The first phase may also include nausea, vomiting, chills, excess urination, sweating, swollen face, irritability, and extreme tiredness.

After an attack the migraine-sufferer often has dull head and neck pains and a great need for sleep. Aspirin seldom helps during an attack. Conventional medical treatment involves drugs that narrow arteries of the head, which can usually stop the headache from developing if taken early enough.

Dietary Supplement: Primary Recommendation Feverfew (0.5% parthenolide)--600 mg--Research shows ongoing supplementation may help reduce frequency and severity of migraines.

Magnesium--360-600 mg--May reduce migraines in premenstrual or premenopausal women

Calcium--1000-1300 mg--May reduce migraines

Vitamin D--400 IU--May reduce migraines

Vitamin B2--400 mg--May reduce migraine frequency and duration

Omega 3 Fatty Acids--625 mg per capsule--2-10 capsules--May reduce migraine frequency

Gamma Linolenic Acid- from Borage Oil or Evening Primrose Oil--1300-1600 BO or EPO--May reduce severity, frequency, duration, and migraine symptoms

Dietary Supplement: Secondary Recommendation

Ginger--4-6 grams--May exert therapeutic and preventive effects in migraine headache

Ginkgo biloba-(24 % flavonglycosides)--200-600 mg--May reduce migraines

SAMe--400-1200 mg--May reduce migraines

Recommended dosage to be taken daily.

Dietary Supplements: Primary Recommendations

Feverfew

The most frequently used herb for the long-term treatment and prevention of migraines is feverfew. Feverfew inhibits both hyperaggregation of platelets and the release of serotonin and some inflammatory mediators. Double blind studies have shown that continuous use of feverfew leads to a reduction in the severity, duration, and frequency of migraine headaches. Studies have used feverfew leaf extracts that were standardized to 0.2% parthenolide (the active constituent), although 0.5% parthenolide standardizations are now available, and may provide greater activity. In any case, results may not be evident for at least four to six weeks.

Magnesium

Research has indicated that migraine patients tend to have lower levels of magnesium than other people. Consequently, you might expect that these patients could benefit from magnesium supplementation. In fact, research shows that premenopausal women with migraines do benefit from magnesium supplements. Intravenous magnesium can relieve some migraines in a matter of minutes. Double blind research shows that 360 mg. of magnesium per day decreases premenstrual migraines. Most of the benefit of supplemental magnesium seems to be with younger women.

Calcium & Vitamin D

Calcium is involved in nerve impulses, and has been shown to help reduce elevated blood pressure. Given its neural/circulatory role, it's not entirely a surprise that high doses of calcium, along with vitamin D which is necessary for calcium absorption, have also been useful in treating several cases of migraines. Recommended dosage levels are 1000-1300 mg of calcium and 400 IU of vitamin D daily.

Vitamin B2

A deficit of cellular energy metabolism may play a role in development of migraine headaches. Vitamin B2 is one of the factors necessary for proper cellular energy metabolism. This lead researchers to study whether vitamin B2 might be an effective treatment for migraine sufferers. In one study, 400 mg per day of vitamin B2 was used to treat forty-nine migraine patients, with beneficial results in most of the migraine sufferers. In a subsequent study, the same amount of vitamin B2 was found to be superior to placebo in reducing migraine attack frequency and duration. The researchers in this study concluded that, Because of its high efficacy, excellent tolerability, and low cost, riboflavin (Vitamin B2) is an interesting option for migraine prophylaxis (prevention).... Other research has also shown that vitamin B2 was effective for treating migraine headaches.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Research indicates that fish oils, which contain the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, may reduce the symptoms of migraine headaches. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil may help due to its effects in modifying prostaglandins, hormone-like substances made by the body, and/or due to its platelet-stabilizing and anti-vasospastic actions. One study used 1 gram of fish oil per 10 pounds of body weight. Of course this would be a tremendous amount of fish oil capsules to consume. If a high potency omega 3 supplement that provides about 625 mg of the fatty acids per capsule were used, however, it would be possible to cut the dose in half. Still, the number of capsules consumed at this rate may be prohibitive. Some researchers have suggested that heart disease patients could benefit from low dose (1-6 grams daily) of fish oils. A similar benefit might be achieved by migraine patients with low dose fish oils.

GLA

A GLA supplement was administered to 129 migraine patients during a six-month study. The results were that 86% experienced reduction in severity, frequency and duration of migraine attacks, 22% became free of migraine and more than 90% had reduced nausea and vomiting. As a result of GLA supplementation, the majority of patients who used medications were able to change to simple analgesics (e.g., aspirin, acetaminophen, etc.); with the exception of 14% of patients who did not experience improvement. It should be noted, however, that GLA-containing supplements, such as Evening Primrose oil and Borage oil should not be used on individuals who are also using anticonvulsant medication, since the GLA products may lower the seizure threshold for those individuals. Dietary Supplements: Secondary Recommendations

Ginger

Ginger is reported in Ayurvedic and Tibb systems of medicine to be useful in neurological disorders. It has been proposed that administration of ginger may exert therapeutic and preventive effects in migraine headache without any side-effects. In fact, one case report suggested success using 4-6 grams per day of powdered ginger for migraines and the nausea that accompanies them. Ginger may also be taken as a tincture in the amount of 1.5-3 ml three times daily.

Ginkgo biloba & SAMe

Ginkgo biloba extract may also help migraine headaches because it reduces the formation of a substance known as platelet-activating factor, which may contribute to migraines. Preliminary research also suggests that oral supplements of SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine) are helpful in the treatment of migraine headaches.

Diet and/or other considerations

A primary consideration for migraine sufferers is that migraines can be triggered by allergies and may be relieved by identifying and avoiding the problem foods. In children suffering migraines who also have epilepsy, there is evidence that eliminating offending foods will also reduce seizures. To identify the offending foods requires allergy testing.

For more information on this, read the Allergies section of this book. Another dietary consideration is that some people who suffer from migraines also react to salt, so reducing salt intake may be beneficial. Also, lactose-intolerant individuals who suffer from migraines may benefit from avoiding dairy products. Furthermore, some migraine sufferers are unable to break down tyramine, a substance found in many foods. This can lead to the absorption of intact tyramine, which in turn may trigger a migraine. Foods high in tyramine include beer and wine products, hard and aged cheeses, dried and pickled fish or meats, soybeans, yeast products, all aged and fermented products. In addition, tryptophan, an amino acid found in protein-rich foods, is converted to serotonin, a substance that might worsen some migraines. As a result, low-protein diets have been used with some success to reduce migraine attacks.

Migraines and colon health

To quote Dr Kurt Grange - It is imperative that the digestive system be kept clean and correctly polarised, however through the natural process of living and eating, a tar like putrification consisting of undigested food can build up on the lining of intestinal walls. This tar inhibits nutrient absorption through the villi and provides a place for disease - causing organisms to grow and for carcinogenic materials to develop.SBOs have the ability to work their way behind this material and dislodge it from the intestinal wall. The natural process of elimination will then cause the tar to be flushed out. end quote Migraines - learn about colon cleanse -

Learn about coral calcium

The calcium and minerals in Alka-LineT Coral Calcium become ionic in the water, allowing the calcium, magnesium and trace minerals from the ocean to be readily bioavailable to the cells. Additionally, HTN's Alka-LineT Coral Calcium products lower the surface tension of the water, allowing it to penetrate and hydrate the cells easily, carrying in nutrients and removing the toxins and waste residue. This was a major discovery in relation to the importance of calcium in the body. Calcium is 35% of the body's mineral makeup. It is scientifically documented that more than 150 diseases are related to calcium deficiency. For this reason, it is often called the "king of minerals." But in order for ordinary calcium to do its work, the body must convert it to an ionic form or the calcium is not efficiently utilized. Now that problem is solved because HTN's Alka-LineT Coral Calcium products are already ionic and readily bioavailable for immediate use by the body. Use the origional coral to help cleanse and balance the body
